Poetry of the Beast. June 10, 2010 Altjungr This is not an instruction manual for magical or occult practice. If you are looking for such a book by Crowley, read "Book 4" or "Magick Without Tears". I suppose if one works in the hermetic or Thelma paradigm for years and takes this book apart piece by piece, one might be able to glean magical truths from its pages, but the generally unintelligible nature of most of the chapters and the lengths Crowley goes to confuse, annoy, and impose false absolutes on his readers keeps me from caring. This is primarily a book of poetry which just so happens to discuss magic. However, once I realized this, I was able to enjoy this book as art. I stopped trying to grapple with the ego of the beast (even his poetry MUST be sacred) and his confusing explanations (I often find the notes more puzzling than the text itself) and was able to ponder the philosophical and entertaining nature of this whimsical little volume. There are some definite gems in this book (I am probably the only mathematician who has a copy of "Chinese Music" tacked to his office door) but I am incapable of taking this book seriously on an intellectual level. But then again... "O if everyman did No Matter What, provided that it is the one thing that he will not and cannot do!"
Not for the Beginner April 24, 2010 DGMjr (Melbourne Australia) Crowley's classic work, the Book of Lies, is an obscure book of mystical poetry that HINTS at many secrets of occultism. Not for the unintiated, this book requires a comprehensive knowledge of Qaballah, Thelema, Magick and of the works of Crowley himself before any of its hidden wisdom will reveal itself to the reader.
Otherwise it remains a cornerstone of modern occultism- a must for the library of every serious student of High Magick and of Thelema.
a genius??? March 13, 2010 THE (MO) Enjoyable but hard going in places however i am new to his work so I may just not understand it.
Filled with fallacy August 13, 2009 T. R. Lansdon (Tennessee) 1 out of 14 found this review helpful
There is not much to say about this text. The man has obviously desired attention all of his life and so goes to make up some wild explanations. Not to be read by the serious intellectual.*
Speedy Delivery, Excellent Condition and Amazing Book!!! January 15, 2008 Talia Miller (Akron, OH USA) 2 out of 5 found this review helpful
The book arrived in excellent condition. You can tell it is brand new! The delivery was speedy. It is an amazing book!!! It was a gift to my husband and he loves it. It swallows him in. For one page read he can come up with numerous pages of notes... he thinks that it is that outstanding. So I would highly recommend this purchase... it's not expensive either!!! :-)
